Okay, I can't stand it.
Now I see why I was made a team member at "Purple Tabby"......
Is this a Chinese water torture?
The last post here was 2 February.
So, to keep things growing here, I'll spread a little "Greybeard" fertilizer......take that the way you will!
United Airlines is presently running an ad campaign that centers around "Rhapsody In Blue" by George Gershwin. This piece of music is one of those that touches me somewhere at the very center of my being.
I never tire of hearing it.
I think Rhapsody In Blue may be my favorite, but there are others that will also stop me in my tracks so I can devote full attention to them:
"Fanfare For the Common Man",
The theme for "2001, A Space Odyssey".
Even some Pop/Rock has the ability to nearly bring me to tears:
"Good Vibrations", by the Beach Boys.
"Hollywood Nights", by Bob Seger.
"Nights on Broadway", by the BeeGees.
"Gangsta's Paradise", by Coolio.
I cannot explain why these particular pieces of music affect me the way they do.....and I don't really care. I guess that is why we have "Art" in our lives in it's various forms.
Care to take a stab at explaining it?
Are there types of Art that affect you viscerally?

Patience GB, Patience! Haven't you learned this by now. You just have to wait them out. Now I know that I'll get blasted for that comment. Something like "We will have to have a talk", but , I don't care. GB - Patience is a virtue. Not a vice. BTW, some torture is not too bad! Oops, now that may be getting close to being a vice.
WOW! There is a PT Blog here! When did that happen? LOL
I’m sorry GB. Everyone else’s Blog is so much more interesting, I keep hanging out everywhere but here! I promise I will try to do better. Tabby’s have a hard time changing their stripes but the GB fertilizer will help, no doubt
TD, we need to have a talk especially if you enjoy torture. I’m a nurse, remember. Torture is something I’m good at! ::: wicked laughter::::
Now, back to music:. There is a strong connection between musical ability/interest and higher math skills. That would explain why the music in my head is limited to Jingle Bells, Jesus Loves Me, and the Oscar Meyer wiener song! You can probably do calculus in your head.
Another concept that might apply is Ear Worms. Nah, nah, ear worms have nothing to do with hygiene -- that’s potatoes. It refers to the phenomena of getting a tune in your head and not being able to get it out. Advertisers like to find tunes that create said worms.
Another theory is that some music replicates the heartbeat we heard in the womb. Interesting thought
Personally, I think you just like those tunes. My faves include
Ode de Joy
Con Ti Partiro
O Mio Babbino Caro
Great Balls of Fire
Theme from Babe
Chain, Chain, Chain
America the Beautiful
In the Mood - and most Swing music
Most bagpipe and drum military marches
Now that I re-read your entry, GB, I think I misunderstood the question. Sooooo I've been thinking, which is a new sensation for me.
The only kind of art that makes me stand still and just enjoy is red glass; some people call it red bubble glass. I know, I know it's dumb but there it is.
Above each window in our family room and living room, there is another smaller window – quarter circles in the family room and half circles in the living room. I put 3 translucent red vases in all 6 of them.
Then I added red vases above my china cabinet, put some on the mantel; put bigger ones on the tables as a center piece, and then added a couple of candle holders on top of the TV. Just to make sure it is everywhere I look, I put a red glass wine decanter in the kitchen window.
I just love looking at it, the way the light makes the glass look.
Come to think of it, I may be running short of red glass. There are many more places I could use a vase or two.
Ask Sara Jean if they have any on QVC.
Bubble glass?
That would be hand blown then?
Sounds like beautiful stuff.
My Mom likes blue, and collected all sorts, even Milk of Magnesia bottles!
Bottle of MOM! That's too funny! A woman after my own heart!
Most of my stuff is the El Cheapo variety. My Step-Dad was a glass blower at Lillys for 35 or so years. I wish I had paid more attention to him when he talked about glass.
I think he said that copper was used to make red glass and that it was not easy to work with (I can't remember why)
Anyway, I think the bubbles in my glass come from metals or elements in the mix that turn into a gas when heated. Not sure.
Anyone know how that works?
I think my all time favorite song for stirring up emotions has got to be. "Unchained Melody", originally by the Rightous Brothers, but IL Divo does a beautiful rendition of it, (Senza Catene).
At Christmas time, hands down, it is
"O Holy Night", I have it by at least 12 artists. There is a singer here Willi G, that does it and it makes the hair on your arms stand up, He does half of it in Hawaiian. Amazing. Never a dry eye.
Amazing Grace
Pure voice only - performed by any talented male/female vocalist.
I heard Whitney do it acappella style one time and it knocked my socks off.
