Audio Book Reviews

Listening to audio books is one of my favorite things. In the last 15 years or so, I’ve listened to so many more books than I ever would have stopped to read. Sometimes I use books on tape or CDs in the car but usually I download books to my MP3 player.

I’d like to say I’m not picky, but I am. While I enjoy a wide variety of books – history, biography, mystery, comedy etc, -- the thing that matters the most is the reader. The reader’s skill can make or break a story and unfortunately it colors my review.

CINC House recently fixed my MP3 player, so I have been playing catch-up with my listening.—I’ll not review them all today, least I lose all my readers (all three of you) at once ;)

My Rating System is self-explanatory
1. Two Paws UP
2. One Paw Up
3. Indifferent Look
4. Litterbox Material
5. Causes Screaming Hissing Fits

Worthwhile, I think, to point out that public libraries generally have Books on tape/cd.
For the price of a library card you get the world read to you!

Another source that I love dearly is the "Cracker Barrel" restaurant chain.
Normally near the cash register, they'll have a carousel of books on tape and cd's.
You have to buy them at a nominal price, but then you can listen to them and return them for a full refund, minus $1 per tape/cd at the next restaurant down the road.

We frequently listen to books as we drive the 12 hours to the Florida Panhandle, and it's a wonderful way to help make the drive more palatable.

Oh yes those are great sources of audio books!

Did you listen to anything good on your recent trip?

My husband likes detective mysteries, especially the “Spencer” series by Robert B Parker or the Bosch novels by Michael Connelly. I think it's because the main character gets to eat Krispie Kreme donuts, drink good wine, gets all the ladies, and always solves the crimes!

We had been listening to one for about a week (in the car) and by Sunday the story took a sudden (but expected) turn. The wife in the story was having an affair, someone killed her husband, and the detective was in a bloody fight with some thugs. More adrenaline than we are used to on Sunday mornings!

Anyway, after church, we looked at each other and said at the same time "back to murder and mayhem!!" He owes me a coke

No "reading" done on this last trip.
After working all night, I came home and we packed the car. I drove the first shift down to Nashville.

Fuel/Pit Stop, then Sara Jean behind the wheel while I cuddled my pillow and napped.
We did the "tag-team" thing from that point on......while one drove, the other napped.
These are not good circumstances for book enjoyment. Instead, I think it's delightful that I can hear Beach Boys/Beatles/Moody Blues all the way to Florida on one "Oldies" station or another. When we finally get our batteries recharged, we accompany the radio at the top of our lungs!
(It's not a pretty thing to witness!)

My mind wanders too much to pay attention when I'm really tired.
Therein lies the best thing about a book, and why it is easier to listen on cd as opposed to a tape:
Going back to review something you've missed is simple with the book, not too difficult with the cd, and a pain in the cooch with tape.

I'm glad to see them more and more going to a system on the cd's where the "chapters" come about every minute on the counter.....sure makes it easier to rewind and review.

Being a civil war buff, the Doctorow book is on my list!

I'm sure you have read/heard all the Shaara books......Michael and Jeff.
Great stuff.

I have heard of the Shaara books but have not read them. Since you like them, I will put them at the top of my Read List.
Thanks GB

Do I need to mention James Patterson? Or Jeffrey Deaver? (He's a little more on the psycho side than many, but very good.) Laugh out loud stuff for me is anything with "Sweet Potato Queens" in the title. And Dave Barry is always good for a chuckle. At our house, if there is nothing to read, we get out the toilet paper wrapper. Riveting.

LOL Thanks Mommanurse! On that joyous recommendation, I downloaded The Sweet Potato Queens Big Ass Audiobook and Financial Planner! I can't wait!
Also downloaded Killer Angels.

Now the challenge: Death and war vs. raucous good humor?

(coin toss)
And a dose of belly-laughs it is!
